Tie Breaker?

Whose bright idea was it to have an even-numbered board in the first place? That has to be the dumbest thing I have ever seen, is there a way to do it on the BOS or just wait and hope for elections? I know Rivers is up in Nov., hopefully he'll be gone.

I'm curious about the election in April anyway, I don't see Greear losing IMO, maybe if the pro-side doesn't show up - which is the story in elections on any level, voter turnout. But he'd have to run again in November too.

I'm not seeing how the tie-breaker is against the rules? Just looking at the basic facts, it looks legit and I don't think for one second that Dr. Perry and the attorneys would have even recommended it to the board if it was this blatant violation.

And two other things :

1)Wtf is Betty talking about with Graham? She says he serves on Mullin's board, but is his boss? I don't even know the board she's talking about, but sounds like another gem from her, it's some volunteer board isn't anyway isn't it? Christ.

2) We have board members comparing the tie-breaker to the holocaust, I know he doesn't say much during these meetings, but that made up for every other meeting and is one of the dumbest things I have ever heard in my life and likely will ever hear.

The board she is talking about is the Board of Directors at the Department of Social Services in Wise county.

Gotcha, hadn't heard what board it was, never really looked though..thought it might just be some committee, is Graham a chairman or something? I don't know how them serving on a board together makes him Mullins boss.

I think the Jewish community would be very offended at Mr. Cantrell's statement about Hitler. We have Jewish citizens living here now, some of whom lost parents and grandparents in the holocaust. For him to make that statement was out of line, and he should be reprimanded by the board for his ludicrous remarks. This is the same guy that wanted to cut out coaching bonuses. He should resign IMHO!

I am for Consolidation BUT! A very BIG BUT!!!

The idea that the 5 pro consolidation majority can appoint someone to cast a tie breaking vote is an insult to me as a voter. How can someone just be handed the power to decide matters as he will surely be deciding? that kind of power being given away is scary?!?! Mr. Hutchinson hit the nail on the head with his remarks in that matter. He is one of the most respectful members of that board. The behavior, of some of the others on both sides are disgraceful. If the "5" can't get their agenda through by the book so be it. But how dare they do what they did, I am offended and I am for consolidation. It's wrong, plain and simple dirty politicking!

Dude, the whole board used to be appointed once upon a time. As long as he meets the basic qualifications, plus he's been a teacher for 35 years, he's fine with me. Hutchinson is anything but respectful too. I don't see how it's that "scary", he only votes when the board members can't get their **** together and agree on anything and only then. Yeah consolidation is the biggest part, but a 4-4 tie could hold up EVERYTHING, we've see blocking measures used by a party on the federal level the past few years blocking/attempting to block the most commonsense things...it's bad enough there, but we really want that on the local level? I applaud them, for catching all the flak they knew they would all so productivity can continue. Look at what happens with the BOS meetings, ones like Rivers have blocked us from getting consolidation.

Matt you know Hutchinson was respectful to you, and most of the time he is to the rest of the board. If the shoes were reversed and the others did something like that you'd be on here complaining about it. You and I would both be P O'd and you know it. To me it screams corruption and its not right. A tie breaker should be an elected position, such as an at-large seat as was suggested. I think the majority of the board needs attitude adjustments, and lessons on respect for fellow members.

Do you know how procedure like this usually works? It's usually the chairman who is the tie-breaker, I can imagine the uproar if Ted were to have that position. I never said he was disrespectful to me, he wasn't from the exchange we had, can't say he was at all and not claiming he is outside of the board or heard anything to suggest otherwise - but as his actions as a board member? Not so, he's as bad as Cornett and you can't say the 5 are out of line either..when do they ever do that?

Well I would be upset, I wouldn't see it as corruption, I see nothing corrupt about it - if it's legal, which I have no doubt it is and will stand up in court, what's corrupt about it. No the people didn't elect this guy, but they elected the ones who chose him and they didn't elect a do-nothing board that couldn't even get the most basic motions passed. For this board to be deadlocked, as it is with the BOS, it would be even more of a disaster for this county. But with all of that said, I'd never be on that side of such a common sense issue, when all facts/statistics say we have to close some schools....I wouldn't let school pride and emotion blind me to that extent. I couldn't ever go against something that's so clear in helping kids and giving them so many more opportunities in life. I support education too much to ever be on that other side.

I wouldn't be against an at-large method, but that would take months to even set up, what are we supposed to do until then? One has to be appointed now, the rules allow for it. If this is wrong, how would an elected tie-breaker not go against the rules either using their argument? They say that it doesn't allow for one, so that would apply to anyone no matter how they got the position, but it doesn't go against the rules period so it's a moot point.

if they weren't losing a seat in april, they would not have appointed a tie-breaker. U know it, I know it, everyone does. If this were republican vs democrats on the BOS and the republicans pulled something like that, u'd have a freaking cow and u know it. I know I would, just because I agree with majority of the school board, does not mean I have to agree with the underhandedness of what they did.
